  'Memento mori' is the medieval Latin theory and practice of reflection on mortality, especially as a means of considering  the transient nature of all earthly goods and pursuits and therefore reminding us not to worry so much. 

 Memento mori jewelry became popular in the late 16th century, and it was reflected in the artistic genre of vanitas where symbolic objects such as wilting flowers signified the impermanence of human life.
